What to Do When You Don’t Like Your Child’s Friend
What should you do when your child comes home from school and tells you that her “best” friend ignored her today? Or that his long-time buddy said unkind things to him? Or that nobody wanted to play with them during recess? These are tough moments for parents; we often want to step in and fix the situation – but there’s a more helpful way to respond.
In this week’s episode, I answer a listener struggling with how to best support her 7-year-old daughter, who has a friend who’s kind one day and mean the next. I dive into how we can best support our kids through difficult friendship dynamics – and I share the one thing we should NOT do if we want our kids to keep talking to us about their friendships.
Here’s the thing: Each and every friendship our child has is a learning experience. When our kids tell us about their friendships and we offer our support – instead of advice, ultimatums, or solutions – our kids will have the space to notice (in their own bodies!) how different friendships feel. Only then can they truly decide which friendships to keep and which ones to let go.
