Raised Resilient: Help Your Highly Sensitive Child
Parenting is the hardest job ever – and parenting a highly sensitive child who’s struggling can feel downright impossible. If you’re suffering through endless meltdowns, walking on eggshells to avoid your child’s huge emotions, and losing sleep worrying that you’re failing your child, you’ve landed in the right place. I’m Dr. Hilary Mandzik – clinical psychologist, parenting specialist, and mom of 3. And I’m here to help you feel GOOD about parenting your highly sensitive child. Join me each week on the Raised Resilient podcast as we explore the topics parents worry about most when it comes to raising highly sensitive kids: managing meltdowns, building emotion regulation, understanding highly sensitive kids, making sense of challenging behaviors, building self-esteem, finding parenting strategies that actually work *with* your child’s sensitivity ... and everything in between. I’ll help you understand your child’s behavior (and your reactions to it!) so that even the really hard moments make more sense. I’ll empower you with tools, strategies, and scripts to navigate those really hard moments with connection and confidence. (And I’ll remind you that no tool, strategy, or script is as powerful as your parenting ace – your relationship with your child!) I’m passionate about parenting differently – parenting in a way that sees all kids as good, even when they’re struggling. I’m passionate about breaking unhelpful generational cycles and putting a hard stop to spanking, time outs, shaming, and yelling. I’m passionate about helping highly sensitive kids build the skills they need in order to manage their big emotions successfully ... and parents learning to regulate their own emotions alongside their children. I want to help you stop worrying about whether you’re “raising them right” and feel confident that your kids will grow up trusting themselves and feeling comfortable in their skin … because they were raised resilient. And that’s big. Because raising our kids resilient can literally make this world a better place. Listen, parenting is hard no matter how you do it. You won’t “enjoy every moment”, no matter what that lady at the store says. But I’m here to help you go from just barely surviving to parenting in a way that genuinely feels good, for you and your highly sensitive child. So warm up your coffee and grab your ear buds. It’s time to turn your child’s sensitivity into their SUPERPOWER! This week, I’m sharing one of those small-but-big parenting moments: my 4-year-old daughter learning to ride her two-wheel bike. It was both ordinary and magical, watching her step into something brand new with so much determination.
I’d spent time preparing her for what it feels like to learn something new—the ups, the wobbles, and even the possibility of frustration. When the moment finally came, all of that groundwork quietly guided what happened next.
Sometimes, our job isn’t to guide every step—it’s to nurture, plant the seeds, and then step back so our kids can discover what they’re truly capable of. This was one of those moments I’ll never forget.

We’ve all heard the advice: “Just stay calm when your child is melting down.” But if you’ve ever tried it, you know it’s not that simple—and there’s a reason for that.
In this episode, we’re unpacking why staying calm can feel so hard in the moment, what’s really going on inside us when our kids are overwhelmed, and what makes a difference in finding our way back.
It’s not about perfection—it’s about something much more powerful that can change the way we show up for our kids (and ourselves) when things get tough.

What do you do when your child’s meltdowns get so big they disrupt everyday life—even cutting a family vacation short? That’s where Emily found herself as a mom of a highly sensitive child. Between the constant meltdowns and the stress of preparing for kindergarten, she was stretched thin and exhausted.
In this honest conversation, Emily shares what life was like in that season—balancing two kids, noticing the differences in parenting styles between her and her husband, and wrestling with the fear that she might be to blame for her child’s sensitivity. She also talks about the mindset shifts that changed how she approached these challenges and gave her family new hope.

Ever find yourself wondering if your highly sensitive child will ever “grow out” of the meltdowns? You’re not alone. A fellow mom asked this exact question after feeling stuck in the cycle of escalating emotions, hitting, and endless late-night worries about the future. It’s the question that so many parents quietly carry: Will things ever get easier?
In this episode, we’ll unpack what’s really going on underneath those big emotions and talk about what growth actually looks like for sensitive kids. You’ll hear why some of the hardest moments are also opportunities for connection, and how your response can make all the difference.
Because here’s the thing: parenting a sensitive child isn’t about waiting for maturity to magically arrive. It’s about learning to sit in the muck together, transforming our own triggers, and modeling the calm we want to see. And when we do that, we begin to see hope — real, lasting change.

Starting middle school is a big milestone, and for a highly sensitive child, it can feel overwhelming. In this episode, I share how my oldest son’s recent transition went surprisingly smoothly—and the preparation that made all the difference.
I’ll walk through what we did ahead of time to help him feel ready and confident, and why that kind of preparation is so powerful for sensitive kids facing big changes.
But here’s the thing: he didn’t always transition so effortlessly. I’ll bring you back to his rocky move from 2nd to 3rd grade to show just how far he’s come. My hope is that this story reminds you that even when transitions are tough, the right support can help our kids truly thrive.

The back-to-school transition can feel like a mountain for sensitive kids—new routines, new faces, and new expectations all at once. And it doesn’t have to be a big milestone year for them to feel the weight of it; even returning to the same school can stir up nerves and overwhelm. What feels exciting to some can feel completely daunting to them.
In this episode, we’ll explore why this shift is such a big deal for sensitive kids, what’s really happening beneath the surface, and how you can see the transition from their perspective.
You’ll also get simple, practical ways to help your child feel supported and secure during this change. Because at the end of the day, it’s not about perfect mornings—it’s about finding your own rhythm together.

In this final Summer Rewind episode, I’m joined once again by veteran teacher and fellow parent Jess Hammond for the second half of our honest, two-part conversation. This time, we’re talking about helping kids build independence with their schoolwork—and what to do when they hit a wall.
We also wade into the tricky waters of homework—what’s helpful, what’s not, and how to advocate for your child if they need extra support, like an IEP or 504 plan.
If school has ever felt like a daily struggle—or even if you're just trying to keep up—this conversation is full of real talk, relatable stories, and gentle reminders that you’re not doing it wrong.

In this 5th episode of our Summer Rewind Series, we’re bringing back part one of a heartfelt, insight-packed conversation with one of my closest friends—a teacher with 23 years of experience and a parent to two elementary-aged kids. Her dual perspective is one every parent needs to hear.
We talk about how to build strong connections between parents and teachers early in the school year, navigating ADHD as both a teacher and a parent, and what educators really wish parents knew. If you’re raising a highly sensitive child or just want a smoother school year, this episode is full of wisdom and encouragement.
This conversation was too good to fit into one episode—so we didn’t! Be sure to catch this week’s replay, and come back next week for part two of this thoughtful, relatable, and refreshingly real discussion.

We’re continuing our Summer Rewind Series by bringing back another favorite episode—because baby sleep struggles never really go out of season. If you’ve ever found yourself Googling “how do I get my baby to sleep?” at 3am, you’re definitely not alone. Baby sleep can feel like one of the hardest parts of parenting, and the pressure to pick a “side” only makes it harder.
In this episode, I chat with Rachael Shepherd-Ohta, certified sleep specialist and the voice behind Hey, Sleepy Baby, about finding that often-missing middle ground. She shares real-talk about what’s normal, how to get more sleep, and when it might be time to check in with your pediatrician.
Here’s the thing: baby sleep is a developmental milestone, not a skill you can force. But if no one in your house is sleeping, you’re not stuck. There are gentle, supportive sleep solutions that actually work—for both you and your baby.

This episode is the third in our Summer Rewind Series, where we’re bringing back past favorites to revisit with fresh perspective. If you’ve ever struggled with picky eating, mealtime stress, or worries about your child’s nutrition, this conversation is one you’ll want to hear.
In this replay, I chat with peaceful parenting educator and mom of three, Bekah Groop, about how to raise intuitive eaters and reduce the pressure around meals. Bekah shares her experience as an eating disorder survivor and offers compassionate, practical advice to help you shift mealtime from chaos to connection.
We dive into how our own food stories—and the impact of diet culture—can show up in our parenting, and how healing ourselves can help us support our kids in developing a healthier, more joyful relationship with food.
