Raised Resilient: Help Your Highly Sensitive Child

Parenting is the hardest job ever – and parenting a highly sensitive child who’s struggling can feel downright impossible. If you’re suffering through endless meltdowns, walking on eggshells to avoid your child’s huge emotions, and losing sleep worrying that you’re failing your child, you’ve landed in the right place. I’m Dr. Hilary Mandzik – clinical psychologist, parenting specialist, and mom of 3. And I’m here to help you feel GOOD about parenting your highly sensitive child. Join me each week on the Raised Resilient podcast as we explore the topics parents worry about most when it comes to raising highly sensitive kids: managing meltdowns, building emotion regulation, understanding highly sensitive kids, making sense of challenging behaviors, building self-esteem, finding parenting strategies that actually work *with* your child’s sensitivity ... and everything in between. I’ll help you understand your child’s behavior (and your reactions to it!) so that even the really hard moments make more sense. I’ll empower you with tools, strategies, and scripts to navigate those really hard moments with connection and confidence. (And I’ll remind you that no tool, strategy, or script is as powerful as your parenting ace – your relationship with your child!) I’m passionate about parenting differently – parenting in a way that sees all kids as good, even when they’re struggling. I’m passionate about breaking unhelpful generational cycles and putting a hard stop to spanking, time outs, shaming, and yelling. I’m passionate about helping highly sensitive kids build the skills they need in order to manage their big emotions successfully ... and parents learning to regulate their own emotions alongside their children. I want to help you stop worrying about whether you’re “raising them right” and feel confident that your kids will grow up trusting themselves and feeling comfortable in their skin … because they were raised resilient. And that’s big. Because raising our kids resilient can literally make this world a better place. Listen, parenting is hard no matter how you do it. You won’t “enjoy every moment”, no matter what that lady at the store says. But I’m here to help you go from just barely surviving to parenting in a way that genuinely feels good, for you and your highly sensitive child. So warm up your coffee and grab your ear buds. It’s time to turn your child’s sensitivity into their SUPERPOWER! If you've ever found yourself losing your temper with your children, then this podcast episode is exactly what you need. We've all been there, right? Moments where frustration boils over, and we end up yelling at our kids because they simply won't cooperate, like refusing to go to sleep at bedtime.
But here’s the good news: in this episode you’ll hear how I experienced losing my cool with my daughter last week, and how I was able to gather myself after; all because of one simple but powerful tool. And the even better news, it’s more simple than you would think!
What’s important to understand is that anger is a normal and valid emotion. Our nervous systems should not always be regulated - but rather, they should be able to regulate again after an intense emotion. This tool will not only teach you how to bring your nervous system back to its norm, but to handle future anger with compassion, and foster a healthy relationship with your highly sensitive child along the way.

If you're grappling with your child's anxiety and feeling lost in how to support them, this podcast episode is a must-listen. It's tough knowing how to handle our children's worries, especially when we feel like we're supposed to fix everything, right?!
Wrong. Most of us feel as if we need to immediately fix feelings of anxiety, but in actuality, we are perpetuating and invalidating those emotions. In this week’s episode, hear a refreshing perspective on dealing with childhood anxiety: instead of rushing to eliminate it, we're encouraged to validate and understand it.
Let’s take a deep dive into the importance of acknowledging and accepting a child's anxiety as a natural part of life. By creating a safe space where their feelings are validated, you can help your highly sensitive child build resilience and learn healthy coping mechanisms that last a lifetime.

Sometimes our kids say or do things that seem downright MEAN, and it’s really tough to know how to respond. In these moments, it’s easy to lose sight of the good kid underneath the challenging behavior, and it’s easy to react in big and unhelpful ways.
In this week's episode, I share a story from my own parenting where I had to get curious and really look for the need underneath challenging behavior. I share my own struggles and how, once I was truly able to get curious, I uncovered the REAL reason for the behavior.
Here’s the thing: When our kids say and do things that seem mean or manipulative or otherwise hard to understand, there’s always a reason – and it’s never just that you have a mean-spirited, bad kid! When you can truly get curious, you’ll open up a whole new reality in your relationship with your highly sensitive child.

When your child is constantly getting upset over the smallest things, it can be hard to truly welcome their feelings. And so often, we *think* we’re welcoming and validating – but we’re actually making things worse and creating even more meltdowns.
In this week's episode, I share 3 not-so-obvious ways we inadvertently make meltdowns worse with our highly sensitive kids. I dive into each of these and help you understand why they’re unhelpful and shift into a more helpful mindset and approach.
Here’s the thing: It can feel challenging to truly allow your highly sensitive child to feel their feelings – and we can worry that those feelings will become a bottomless pit if we do. But in truth, allowing your child to feel all their feelings is the key to moving past the cycle of constant meltdowns..

If your kids are constantly arguing (like mine are), this is an episode you won’t want to miss. It can be so hard to know how to help our kids work things out when they’re screaming at each other across the room and getting more upset by the second, right?!
In this week's episode, I share a tool that we’ve been using in my family for awhile now – and it’s so simple it’s impossible to do it wrong. It’s called The Perspective Game, and there’s literally just one rule. And as a bonus, this is a game that will help build skills your kids will need for life.
Here’s the thing: Sibling conflict is super normal and even healthy … but there are a few things our kids do need from us in these tough moments to help them learn conflict resolution skills, build emotion regulation, and ultimately be able to handle tough moments in relationships someday when they’re out in the world on their own – and that’s exactly what this game will help you do!

Has your child ever told you to “go away!” … but then gotten super upset when you actually tried to give them space? Yep, mine has too. It’s so hard to know what you’re supposed to do in those moments!
In this week's episode, I unpack why highly sensitive kids tend to push us away when they need us most – and what we can do to respond effectively in these moments. I also show you how to know the difference between the times when your child needs you to stay despite their pushing you away … and the times where your child actually does need some space.
Here’s the thing: Highly sensitive kids WILL push us away when they need us most – it’s a self-protective unconscious response. But when we know how to respond effectively, we can avoid triggering their worst fears and making the situation harder than it needs to be.

Natasha and her family were really struggling; their 4-year-old highly sensitive daughter was having daily meltdowns, showing aggressive behaviors toward her baby sister, and resorting to destruction (like slamming a door and breaking a spice rack full of glass) in really tough moments.
In this week's episode, I interview Natasha about her family’s experience in my Chaos to Connection program. She shares how, almost immediately, the dynamic in her family started to shift, and she started to “see a spark” in her child that she hadn’t seen in literal years.
Natasha’s story will inspire you and help you see that you’re not alone. And if your highly sensitive child is struggling like her daughter was, let’s talk! Click the link below and schedule a free Zoom session with me where we’ll talk about what’s working in your parenting & what’s not – and we’ll figure out together whether my program is a fit for your family.

As parents – especially in the gentle, respectful, conscious parenting space – we’re constantly told that we have to “stay calm” in order to be effective with our kids. But sometimes staying calm feels unreachable, and it’s easy to feel like you’re failing in those moments.

In this week's episode, I unpack why it’s so hard to stay calm in the face of your child’s dysregulation and why focusing on this alone sets us up to fail. I then share what to focus on instead and how to set yourself up for success with realistic expectations.

Here’s the thing: There’s a lot working against us as parents when it comes to staying calm, and it can be a LOT. If you shift your focus just a little, you'll be setting yourself up to feel effective and connected as a parent, even in the hard moments!
